Overview

Revit Family Browser with Modeling Automation for Wall Systems

We created a family browser in dockable panel that allows architects to access, preview, and insert manufacturer-specific Revit content directly from the cloud. In addition, we implemented automation tools for placing joints and doors in partition wall systems — streamlining design workflows and ensuring product standards are followed.

  • Family browser
  • Joints & door placement logic
  • Cloud integration

Problem

Designers using the manufacturer’s Revit content needed a faster way to access and place families following product lines standards. Manual placement of joints and doors also caused inconsistencies and errors. This slowed down project delivery and risked incorrect product usage.

Solution

The browser displays all Revit families created via the configurator or uploaded to the cloud, grouped by type and visual preview. Users can drag and place elements directly into the model. Additionally, we built logic for auto-placement of wall joints based on panel layout rules and smart insertion of doors, detecting correct host panels and adjusting geometry and alignment automatically.

Final solution includes:

  • Custom options bar
  • Joints placement mechanism
  • User-friendly UI
  • Template families updating logic from the cloud database
  • Notification system

Process

Integration design

Designed a user flow that connects the existing configurator with a Revit panel interface.

Browser development

Built a dockable WPF panel that loads and previews cloud-based Revit content grouped by categories and tags.

Placement automation logic

Developed rules to auto-insert joints between wall segments based on layout geometry and manufacturer specs. Implemented smart placement of manufacturer’s doors into valid host walls with auto-adjusted parameters and offsets.

Testing

Ran QA in live Revit projects with large models and multi-user coordination scenarios.
